Video Of The Year: "Runaway" (As Fast As You Can)

If there is 1 light still burning bright in the Rap world, it is Kanye, I love how he keeps pushing the medium of the music video.

NO i didn't realize she is a bird, ha....

I do love me some interpretative ballet!

(I am pissed how the cameraman didn't get the shot framed right, so a lot of times you can't see all of the dancer's legs/feet & body in the shot. Almost perfect thou.)

This is my favorite version of this video, since it has the kick ass Ballet in it (yes I called Ballet, KICK ASS)

Baby I got a plan.... runaway as fast as you can!

Hands down, the best video, produced this year, wonder how Lady Gaga will respond?

Full version of Runaway is here.

Also, Kanye brought out the dancers when he performed this song on the MTV Video Music Awards (shout out to my 1st girlfriend who turned me on to modern dance/ballet)

Which by the way is my favorite version of this song, he ups the Hip Hop sound of the song, and plus he made everyone think that it was about his "imma let you finish moment", but really it was about him and his big ego.

Ohh and just in case you doubt how awesome he is, there will always be this, to cement his place as the man.

There has been NO. COMPETITION. Ironically he will probably win Video of the Year next year, at the VMA's for this song.

Runaway (MTV VMA version, with vocals amped up ;)

I'll always love British Radio

This is why British Radio, and specifically Radio 1 will always be better than American Radio.

NPR cannot hold a torch to performances like this. NPR gets Janelle Monae, Radio 1 gets, Magnetic Man

The girl singing here in the video is Katy B, who is currently blowing up in England.

Oh and don't forget the OFFICIAL start of the WSUM weekend starts Thursday nights @ 10PM on WSUM 91.7FM

Great radio, live and direct here in Good ole Madison.

4 HOUR SHOW April 22nd Silent Shout

Once a semester, and once a summer, I do a longer show, 4 hours plus (record is 7 for me), trying to play the things that I think all fit together but at the same time, play things that I wouldn't have played on either a 2 hour show or in pieces here and there.

Thus the WSUM weekend, started at 8pm instead of its normal 10pm. It seemed to be a big hit with all the people who normally don't tune in that late to get their Synesthesia fix.

Tracklisting is going off of the WSUM playlist that I entered, during the show, because I erased the actual (d'oh) playlist. If it seems off or whatever, shoot me an email and I will try to get you the exact song name or whatever. It should be close to thou.

  1. Welcome To My Head by Thunderpuss
  2. Dog Days Are Over by Florence and The Machine
  3. Silent Shout by The Knife
  4. Great Release by LCD Soundsystem
  5. In For The Kill (remix) by La Roux

  13. Same Old Show by Basement Jaxx

  35. Two Of Us by Supermayer
  36. Thieves In The Night by Hot Chip
  37. Half A Scissor by Mr. Oizo
  38. Your Woman by White Town
  39. Orinoco Ninja by Die Antwoord
  40. America by Dusty Kid
  41. Other songs, but I don't feel like labeling them, if need be email me.

There really isn't much to say about this show, probably my new favorite show that I did, any show where I play something off of the Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory is going to be a good show as far as I am concerned, and Johnny Depp & Tim Burton, how could you. Fuckers that remake was the worst thing EVER. Burton I forgive you, you did make Nightmare Before Christmas after all, but Johnny Depp was been wack sauce, since he left 21 Jump Street.

March 18th Show: Here We Go

About this week: I wasn't feeling all that happy, so I did a set with things that didn't exactly make me sad, but just kinda evoke "meh" in me, although there are some very fantastic songs that make "meh" a lot more tolerable for me. Humming is a live version, Portishead who are thought of 'as' Trip-hop, for me they are just a great band who do a very unique sound. Humming breaths a lot more here than the studio version. Here We Go by Jon Brion, is something that has always made me sad and crack a smile at the same time. Who doesn't love music that does that to you. I think the first time I heard Breathe by Telepopmusik was in an Abercrombie and Fitch store and I thought; man who is their corporate music person who has some very decent taste and forward thinking sensibilities, it was MUCH before the song got all played out and stuff.

Tracklisting is approximate

  1. Organ Donor by DJ Shadow
  2. Humming by Portishead
  3. Song 1 by DJ Krush
  4. Here We Go by Jon Brion
  5. Edge Of Blue by DJ Krush
  6. Half Forgotten Daydreams (Twilight) by Kokin Gumi
  7. Samba Da Bencao by Bebel Gilberto
  8. Fu-Yu by DJ Krush
  9. Breathe by Telepopmusik
  10. '95 aka Make Things Right by Lemon Jelly
  11. Boy From School (remix) by Hot Chip
  12. Night Scented Stock by Kate Bush
  13. Unravel by Bjork
  14. Chiminea by DJ Koze
  15. Help Me by Timo Maas
  16. Distractionz by Basement Jaxx
  17. Morskaya by SCSI-9
  18. Relevee by Delia Gonzalez
  19. Leave It by The Field
  20. Hussel by MIA
  21. Love Don't Dance Here Anymore by Tiga
  22. Chase The Sun by Planet Funk
  23. Hearts Collide by Little Boots
  24. Videotape by Radiohead
  25. I Saw A Light by Bat For Lashes
Decided I would get a little bit more half smile--half  0_o  with The Boy From School and some Lemon Jelly. Lemon Jelly are probably the best band and example of "Chillout music" as you can get, they make very good albums and even better compilations. Unravel by Bjork is seriously everything I love about Bjork all at once. Different, strange, on some other shit, and awesome all in 1 song. Leave It by The Field is off of an incredible album from 2009 which was nice to see that it was only 5 or 6 songs, and they all clock in over 7 min's, nice to see some artists have not abandoned the long, building and churning type songs (with all due respect to Joanna Newsom.)

Ended with some love songs, and my favorite Bat For Lashes song, hope you enjoy

Thoughts on the first half of the year musically speaking

It has been a REALLY bad year for music thus far. Most of the major labels are WAYYY off sales from even last year (is it ever going to bottom out?), even Video Games, are having a down year thus far...

I am working on getting all of the shows from this past semester up and running, but I don't feel like just posting straight shows without words, but maybe that might happen, I am fucking tired of writing, ill tell you that.

Musically I have really only bought 1 album (that I have listened to enough to have an opinion about), and that is Pantha Du Prince's Black Noise album

Pantha Du Prince has made melodic-minimal-techno for the past 7 years, releasing 2 other very good albums with 1 or 2 superior songs on them each.

Pantha Du Prince is available on itunes/Amazon/Beatport & Juno download.

It's kinda hard to find otherwise.

I will probably have a better attitude on music once new albums from MIA, SIA, Ellen Allien and many more release their albums for the summer push.

Until then I will keep my ears tuned for some new Synesthesia magic to share with you.

May 6th Show: My One And Only Thrill

 Whats good?

Been a super long time since I posted anything, for that I apologize. But on the other hand, I will be posting like its hot, so that is good. This is the supposed last official show of the semester before the summer starts, I was so far behind that I didn't even sign up for the inter period of shows and some losers signed up for my slots so there might not be any Synesthesia shows to officially start the WSUM weekend.

This is the show in 8 parts, I have been experimenting with the links and such so let me know PLEASE if any of the links are broken or don't seem to be straight forward enough, any or all input would be great. Also let me know if the shows seem to crack or peak a lot, if so that is something I will look into possibly fixing.

Approximate track listing (I didn't play the exact order that I was going to because of technical difficulties.)

May 6th Show (8 parts)     <-- Click to download
  1. My One And Only Thrill by Melody Gardot
  2. Les Nuits by Nightmares On Wax
  3. My Girls by Animal Collective
  4. Sleepyhead by Passion Pit
  5. Lights Go Down by Basement Jaxx
  6. Weak Become Heroes by The Streets
  7. Feels Like Home by Basement Jaxx
  8. Nobody's Home by Ulrich Schnauss
  9. Goodbeatapella by Deee-Lite
  10. Pon De Floor (remix) by The Streets
  11. Pon De Floor by Major Lazers
  12. Today Has Been Ok by Emiliana Torrini
  13. La Ritournelle by Sebastian Tellier
  14. Your Song (cover obviously) by The Streets
  15. Darkness & The Light by Matt Warren
  16. Abglanz by Pantha Du Prince (Best Song of 2010 IMHO).... Thus far  0_o
  17. Disconnect by Plasticman
  18. Fleece On Brain by Matthew Dear
  19. Brutalga Square by DJ Koze
  20. Memory Of A Free Festival by David Bowie
Notes On Songs:

My One and Only Thrill is an amazing album, and Melody has such an interesting personal story, I am rooting for her. Weak Become Heroes, is by far one of my fav Rap songs of all times, and The Streets has made 2 classic albums that should be heard as complete albums to fully appreciate. Feels Like Home by Basement Jaxx, has Meshell Ndegeocello on it, and is really a downtempo masterpiece.

Second hour has some more Techno type music, with a triple threat of Minimal near the end, I ended the show with my favorite David Bowie song of all time: Memory Of A Free Festival

I'll let you know the official summer schedule once I know it myself.

March 4th: Dog Days Are Over

Boing boing, what's good people?

Show starts off with the 3 new tracks from Die Antwoord and then the mongo gets even heavier.

Christopher Walken, doing spoken word to Lady Gaga..... Genius

I played some Lady Gaga mixed with Ziggy Stardust, fun and kinda works, I personally am not all that big into "mashups", since I think they are usually just lazy and not all that interesting. However it somewhat works here.

However the mashup of Die Antwoord & Enya is balls.

1st Song Of The Week (SOTW) "I Got A Story To Tell"

The 1st SOTW is in honor of a man who died 13 years ago on March 9th 1997

His 1st album was called "Ready to Die" and his 2nd album was called "Life After Death" released March 25th.....

15 days AFTER he was murdered. I always remember how pumped I was to go and get "Life After Death" and how ironic and perverse that it was getting this mans magnum opus, which was so rife with him dealing with his own mortality.

The last song on the album is called: "You're Nobody (Till Somebody Kills You)".

Anyway this posting isn't really tied to how much of a tragedy his life and music is and was.

This is about the music.

There used to be a time when album release dates were a big thing. Albums didn't get leaked, they had lead in singles and promotional tours.

Albums were events.

The Exclusive Company, used to do midnight release parties, I remember getting all sorts of albums the night they came out, and the one I remember the most was the album release for "Life After Death" by Biggie.

They had all the promotional posters up, and there was a big line of people really excited to be getting the album. It used to always reassure me that there were so many diverse people who were just as into music as me that they would be up and out and about at midnight on a Monday night/Tuesday morning, I really miss those days.

Sometimes I wonder if we all lose our sense of wonderment and enthusiasm for the world, when we get older & our lives get filled with so many bad things.

I digress....

I couldn't decide to do this post on his album release date (March 25th) or on his death (March 9th) I did know that, I wanted to have the 1st SOTW be about my favorite rapper.

So as to the music: 3 songs

  1. I Got A Story To Tell <-- "you better talk to him...., arm, leg"
  2. Juicy <-- "It was all a dream...."
  3. Wake Up Show Freestyle <-- "I wanna curse"
I have always thought that good flow and rapping, reminds me tremendously of poetry, and Biggie was almost comically gifted with prose and flow.

    Biggie is certainly somebody....

New Things: Video of the week & Song of the week (VOTW & SOTW)

    Hello Lovelies,

I have been remiss in getting the shows to you and that sort of thing, but 18 credits of awfulness, will do that to you.

However, I will be somewhat better off by Thursday, and lo and behold there will be another show, until then (when I can get all caught up), I will bore you with another video you may, or may not have seen/heard.

This will be the 1st post, in a video of the week, which I hope will either be tied into the show, or at least an awesome piece of sound & vision.

I will also be doing a song of the week, which I will be giving away which will be uncompressed so you can listen to it in all its glory on your crappy computer speakers/headphones -_-

Seriously, your ears will thank you if you upgrade your sound making device.

    Without further adieu.....

    1st Video Of The Week:
DJ Shadow: Blood On The Motorway (Fan-made video version)
from the album The Private Press
This video is made by a fan, it fits the song so, so, well. This song usually makes me feel is about 1000 different emotions when I hear it, I fell in love with this song the first time I heard it, and I hope you do too.

I love so many video's but this is easily 1 of my favorites.

I also own this video if anyone want's a copy, shoot me an email, with some contact info, and i'll do you 1 better.

I hope you watched the whole video, it does something to you, doesn't it?

When is someone going to give me $$ to do this?

Or when am I going to have the $$ to go on a trip like this 0_o

I know it is kinda passe to just blow $$ like this, but you kinda gotta admit, it does look like a lot of fun.

On a side note they have 1 other video called 'baby baby baby', which is amazing also

MAKE THE GIRL DANCE [KILL ME] (official video)

The group is called: Make The Girl Dance
The song is called: Kill Me

I'm sorry, but this video just makes me happy, but seriously, what record label gave these dudes this $$

See you all later on tonight,

Feb 18th Show "Where's Your Head At?"

Tracklisting as follows: (all easily found from important albums)
    1. Robot Rock by Daft Punk
    2. Kalifornia by Fatboy Slim
    3. Rollin' & Scratchin' by Daft Punk
    4. Everybody Loves A Carnival into Jack It Up by Fatboy Slim

    20. Les Djinns remixed by Moby
    21. Southern Sun by Paul Oakenfold
    22. One More Time by Daft Punk
There are many superior songs in this set, however they are not necessarily the agreed upon 'greatest' hits of said artists. They are what I feel were the best songs that would fit into the show, given the artist's picked, and what I think are their best songs. For sure there are many other songs I could have picked, and there are other artist's who fit into the idea of 'best & biggest' dance acts. Hopefully you find this as illuminating as enjoyable.

Truthfully, its a joke, like a bad episode of hollyoaks,
Can’t keep up with the cover notes,
So they got bad credit livin’ on direct debit,
In debt but they still don’t get
Cos they too busy livin’ the high life, the night life
Huggin’ the high way, livin’ large
    And they all say

Let me take you down to London city
Where the attitudes bad and the weather is shitty
Everybody’s on the paper chase, its one big rat race
    Everybody got a screw face
    So many too fake
Checking the height, they say they ready to ride
Im on the inside looking at the outside
    So its a accurate reflection
City wide north east west and the south side
Everywhere I go there’s a girl on the corner
Guns and drugs got the city like a sauna,
And its getting warmer and out of order
Trying to put a struggling mother to a morner
Mr politician can you tell me the solution
Whats the answer whats the conclusion
    Is it an illusion.
    Is it a mirage.
I see youngers dieing coz their tryna live large??
    And they all say

We are livin in the days of the credit crunch
    Give me the doh
    Im trying have a bunch
But I cant have rice for lunch
its not there aint enough to share
Ain’t fair never dreamed that he could be rare
Who cares who dares to make a change
Everybody in the club trying to make it rain
But not for famine just for the sake of habit
15 minutes of fame and everything’s the same
Again and again I see the same thing
Everybody acting like they their plane sailin’
I see rough seas ahead maybe a recession
And then a depression in whatever profession
This is my confession I cant fight im in the forefront
Living for money ready to start like a bungee jump
With no rope but I ain’t trying to see the bottom
    Because that’s were I came from, I ain’t forgotten

    Be My Valentine

    I hope you had a happy V-Day, I did.

Anyway here is an hour of music to hopefully get you to first base.

    Put on and enjoy

It is in 5 parts and the songs got all jumbled up and rearranged, if you want to listen to it how I intended it to be listened to then you need to reorder the songs into the track-listing that follows.

I would recommend listening to it as intended, don't be a jerk, just listen to it how I say ;)

    Part A
    Part B
    Part C
    Part D
    Part E

(The parts are just that, not in order, had to move things around so I didn't have to make 10 drops)
    1. This Could Be The Start Of Something Big
    2. Your Love
    3. Unfoolish
    4. I Won't Let The Chump Break Your Heart
    5. Crazy For You
    6. I've Fallen In Love With You
    7. I'm On Fire
    8. Sex On Fire
    9. Little Bit
    10. See Me Through
    11. Number 1
    12. Music Sounds Better With You
    13. Stuck On Repeat
    14. Love Will Tear Us Apart
    15. I Need Love
    16. You've Got The Love
If you put the songs into this order you are a genius and I love you.

*Note these song's are uncompressed (you're welcome for that), as such that is why the drops are so big.

    3rd Show Jan 28th (Funkier Than A Mosquito's Tweeter)

3rd Show of the semester, not your usual Techno Madness, but a good trip altogether. If you don't particularly care for full fledged 4/4 beats, than this might be the show for you ;)

Overall the best show IMHO, of the semester thus far.

Lots of goodies in this show, started out with Joanna Newsom and then moved into some Nina Simone. Second hour has some very stellar tracks in it. "Hang for Bruno & La Ritournelle" in particular.

The final 4 songs are probably the best 4 songs that I have played in a row on any given show.

Jan 28th Show in 6 parts

    Tracklisting as follows
    1. Emily by Joanna Newsom
    2. Funkier Than A Mosquito's Tweeter by Nina Simone

How do you find your music? Thoughts on posting songs/shows for free

It is important to note that music is not free.

I BUY a lot of music, I mean A LOT

I listen to almost any style of music, and I enjoy nearly as many. Which is how this show has come into being. I do the show because I love to listen to, discover and share my love of music with anyone who will listen (ha)

I know quite a few people who do not value music as much as I do, this is their choice-- HOWEVER

    Music is not free

    MUSIC IS NOT FREE

    IT IS NOT FREE

By downloading and copying disks, without buying any of the ARTISTS products, you are cheating many people out of their hard work and just dues. Many artists will not have the chance to create ART, without the financial compensation. If you want the next Radiohead/Jay-Z/Green Day/Kurt Elling, we have to make it viable that they can attempt to become professional musicians.

That means they gotta get paid.

You don't think that steak should be free (I know some people may indeed think products should be free...), you don't think movies should be free (I know some people may indeed think products should be free...), and you certainly don't think whatever you do for financial compensation, should be free. You don't get to decided after the fact how much you are going to work for, nor should musicians.

There are many people who make their living through the music industry.

Engineers/Sound Developers/Software Engineers/Art Directors/Video Directors/Radio Stations/Artists/Session Players/Concert Venues and of course Record Companies. There are many, MANY more people who get fed off of Music, and those dollars are made through selling Music.

I have bought many an album that I have not listened to before, on the recommendation of a magazine, the opinion of a important music critic (New Yorker) or music critic (is there something he hasn't wrote for?) .

There are the music orientated websites:  Allmusic-- Pitchfork -- Resident Advisor (best Electronic/Dance music, review/recommend website IMHO) and music metascore sites.

There are MANY other sites, and professional people that recommend and suggest music to me, in addition I think the artists themselves have provided some of the best recommendations on other music that I either should be into, or should think of.

I struggle with making my shows and songs available for free; since I am stealing from these artists who I tremendously admire for the ART that they create. My favorite album was created using snippets of other records (ie. sampling) (and on a double side note, the photographer who took the picture, is named B+ :&) which I will talk about some other time, but I will let DJ Shadow speak on the ART form of music making himself.  DJ Shadow's thoughts on music industry, file sharing   and quite possibly the authority on the music industry and business Robert Christga.

All I am really trying to say, that if you enjoy my show, or any of the music you hear on the show, PLEASE support the artists whose music would not exist, without OUR continued financial support. The industry is dying and then we will either be left with fewer choices (since less people will be willing to just strike out on their own and try and make music their career) & less music.

That is not what I want, nor do I think that is what others want.

So with all of this said, I will put my show's available and songs, with the intent, that YOU the listener, will at some point in time, support the Music/Musician in some way through buying their products or seeing them in concert.

SUPPORT MUSICIANS & MUSIC....Pay for their ART

    Preaching over,
    Clifton (DJ C+)
